Testers CAN and should be used for preventative maintenance for large fleets and workshops. If used properly a digital tester CAN tell you if a battery is servicable or if it is has reached the end of its usable life.

Please note that this does not replicate a full CCA lab test, but gives a value based on the tester manufacturers experience, research and development. The basics of this is that the tester measures the internal resistance of the battery and using complex algorithms it calculates and gives the user a CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) value. Most digital testers work on the principal of conductance testing.

The first thing a user will need to do is understand how a tester works as well as its limitations and benefits. UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL(CONDUCTANCE) BATTERY TESTERS The basic principles of these testers are the same, however I would advise caution as the algorithms, pass/fail criteria, accuracy and the R&D going into the testers vary hugely from brand and type. There are of course many others which have not been listed. We have come across a number of types from brands such as Midtronics, Sealey, DHC, Durite and Argus. The only way would seem for workshops and garages is to invest in one of the many digital testers which are on the market. I am also aware that some workshops and garages have been advised to stop using the “drop tester” (or nolten discharge tester) due to the sparks created. Not being able to open a battery’s lid/vent caps has meant that fluids levels can’t be checked and neither can the specific gravity of the individual cells.
